Presentation of the House Stele

The House Stele

House Stele is one of the oldest preserved houses in the medieval town of Kamnik, with a history that dates back to 1701. For more than three centuries, the house has been home to the traditional crafts of candlemaking, gingerbread making, and honey-based confectionery, preserving a unique part of Slovenia’s cultural heritage for generations.

Today, House Stele welcomes visitors as a living heritage house, where history, craftsmanship, and family tradition come together under one roof. As you walk through its historic rooms, you can discover the stories of the Stele family and gain insight into the daily life, skills, and customs that shaped the town of Kamnik over the centuries.

Visitors can explore the Candlemaking Museum, which preserves traditional tools, techniques, and equipment once used in the production of beeswax candles. A particular highlight is the historic Black Kitchen, the oldest preserved and still functioning example of its kind in Kamnik, dating back to the 14th century. This remarkable space offers a rare glimpse into the way food was prepared before modern kitchens existed.

Another unique feature of the house is the Plečnik Memorial Room, designed by the renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. The room reflects the close friendship between Plečnik and the Stele family and stands as a testament to his artistic vision and enduring legacy.

Whether you are interested in history, architecture, traditional crafts, or authentic cultural experiences, House Stele offers a memorable journey through more than 300 years of Slovenian heritage.
